Swedish Review

From Nashville, Tennessee comes Rayna Kay, talented singer-songwriter who´s been performing around the legendary Willie Nelson and others during the years. She now has her own band, The Vagrant Saints, fronted by the impressing guitar player Michael Saint-Leon. You can easily hear, immediately, that Kay is a musician with strong artistic integrity, and lots of things at heart.

"Moondust in my hand" - follow-up to the debut album "Beyond where angels fly"- is a wonderful album, which in fact could open up windows for a big commercial break-through. The songs are filled with personal lyrics and burning passion, as Kay easily moves in a borderland between root based folk rock and pleasant country.

Despite different expressions and styles, she has her own profile. Her voice is sensual and at the same time a bit raw, naturally working along with the melodic richness of this well-written material.

Moondust In My Hand Our Rating: 87 out of 100 Country music? It´s a hard-knock life. Rai (Madonna) Kay Osia´s story bears witness to this. Born on February 6th 1964 in St Louis, Missouri, she grew up in a two-story house with her parents and most of her eight siblings. Later she´d work as a supermarket cashier and waitress to make ends meet. Her tribulations come to the foreground on second album Moondust In My Hand. Kay claims sole songwriting on eight of the ten tracks, co-writing opener ´Put Your Hands In Mine´ and closer ´Wax and Ashes´. Appropriately enough, the album was recorded in the home of country, Nashville, Tennessee, where Kay is now based. Claiming to be influenced by Willie Nelson, Roseanne Cash, and Johnny Cash, Rayna proves to be the equal of her idols. On Moondust In My Hand she keeps the spirit of country music alive and kicking. Its future would appear to be in the safest of hands.(Matthew Hirtes) For more information: http://www.raynakay.com/

RAYNA KAY
MOONDUST IN MY HAND
Label : R Kay Records

Sfeervolle nummers zijn "When I Roam October" en de liefdevolle afsluiter "Wax And Ashes". Door de rijkere arrangementen en kristalheldere productie van Rayna Kay and The Vagrant Saints zelf klinkt de plaat zelfs behoorlijk warm.
Kortom: een klein juweeltje.

ALT COUNTRY NL

(Leo Kattestaart)

Inmiddels is ze veertig geworden en zegt: "I'll never lose my dream." (Johanna Bodde)

Real Roots Cafe Review Translation
Rayna Kay, Moondust in My Hand (Independent) Listen now to tracks of Moondust in My Hand via CD Baby Rayna Kay never had given up her initial dream to become a 'real' singer and musician and bought her first own guitar of a tax refund. While her marriage failed in an unpleasant way, she started to perform in a pub, somewhere in Soulard, St.Louis. There she was discovered by a vagabond, who appeared to be a talented musician as well and appreciated the qualities of her unique, pure voice. Rayna's bio continues likewise half a page. Gigs in the theatre of Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard in Branson, Missouri; after this place was closed she lived in a log cabin in Tennessee, owned by Willie, and did meet Kostas , famous name from Nashville, who also encouraged her. In 1993 she left for Nashville herself to record a demo and play wherever she could, even, if need be, in the streets. In the meantime she turned forty , but is still convinced:' I'll never lose my dream'. Why Rayna does not succeed in breaking through is a complete mystery to me, when I listen to the self-released album 'Moondust in My Hand'. She indeed has a special voice, hard to describe, think Melissa Etheridge/Lucinda Williams. Her band 'The Vagrant Saints' plays very skilled a mixture of rock and americana. The title song is a strong one: 'But like the moondust in the air, his presence stays' and served as the inspiration for the beautiful drawing on the cover. The stylish song 'When I Roam October' reminds of Roseanne Cash and contains a star part for the saxophone, just like the final track ' Wax and Ashes' , in which is concluded : 'The only thing that lasts is love'. And music, Rayna!

Rayna Kay - Moondust in my Hand (2004) For some people, Singing and Songwriting is just a job... for some, it is the dream of a lifetime. Rayna Kay is just such a dreamer, who has put to CD the cumulative result of her musical influences and a life long dream. Rayna's latest CD, "Moondust in my Hand", is all original music, lovingly crafted with the dream in mind. It is seldom that you find someone with the courage to follow their dream, but Rayna is just such a person, which is reflected in her music. In a recent interview, Rayna said; "I'll write it down, I'll sing, and I'll never lose my dream". This is indicative of the depth of her desire and determination to become a fine singer songwriter, and Moondust is one heck of a fine effort. It is not an effort in vain. Moondust is a fine collection of tunes, steeped in longing, that create a tapestry of a young womans life in song. Her music is heartfelt, passionate and some might say gutwrenching, but most of all it is real. As such, it is a lost art in this day and age. Like many a young artist, Rayna is still climbing the mountain that claims so many. It may be unclimbable to some... but not her. Moondust is the first step in a promising music career for Rayna Kay.
